War Crimes, Christian Nationalism, and the 25th Amendment

Even though the Supreme Court took a break from hearing oral arguments, there was still plenty of legal news breaking every day. Katie Phang joins Leah to recap that news, including Trump's threats against Iran, the overt Christian nationalist rhetoric coming from the Secretary of Defense, and a disturbing case that SCOTUS decided not to hear. Then, Emily Amick, joins Leah to talk all things 25th Amendment-- where it came from, why we probably won't see it invoked here and now, and why we should keep talking about it anyways. From Convoy to Cabinet? The Floor Crossing Crisis

Canada’s political landscape just took a strange turn. In this episode of Politics Is Broken, we break down the wave of floor crossings that has pushed the Liberals to within one seat of a majority government — without an election. Are MPs switching sides out of principle… or pure political survival? We dig into: The recent Conservative → Liberal defectionsWhy Marilyn Gladu’s move is causing backlashWhether Mark Carney is playing 4D chess… or making a risky mistakeWhy majority governments might be more dangerous than they seemAnd what this all says about the state of Canadian politics right nowPlus… A little Trump-induced global anxiety, ketchup chips diplomacy, and why Canadian politics increasingly feels like a group project where nobody trusts each other.

When War Breaks the Rules And the Markets

This week on American Power, we break down a dangerous new phase of the Iran conflict: threats of strikes on civilian infrastructure, rising oil prices, and a global system starting to buckle under pressure. Military expert Chad Scott explains why targeting power plants crosses into war crime territory not just internationally, but under U.S. law and why history shows this kind of strategy doesn’t weaken regimes, it hardens them. Energy expert Matt Randolph (Mr. Global) walks through what’s already happening in the oil markets, where physical crude is trading far above futures, a warning sign that gas prices could soon surge past record highs. The Daily Blast: Donald Trump’s America Is Deeply Unwell, and It’s Time to Say So

Donald Trump’s Truth Social feed can get awfully revealing. He just unleashed numerous posts that open a new window on the man and his presidency: the transactionalism; the amorality; and the utter, buffoonish incompetence. In one, he attacked his MAGA allies in a way that displayed his utter lack of any principles. In several others, he revealed that he simply has no grasp whatsoever of the situation he faces with Iran’s Strait of Hormuz. All of which raises a question: How do we make sense of the fact that this man is president? We talked to political theorist Alan Elrod, who has a good piece arguing that the election of Trump—twice—should prompt deep introspection about what our country has become. We discuss Elrod’s argument that America needs a dose of hard truths about this man and this moment, dissect Trump’s “personalist” presidency, consider whether civic malaise produced our current national crisis, and discuss how to pull out of it. Birthright Citizenship + Bye-Bye, Pamela Jo Bondi

Last week saw oral arguments in the birthright citizenship case, Trump v. Barbara, and listeners, it finally happened: a legal argument so outlandish from the Trump administration that even this Court will have to rule against him. Leah and Melissa break down the back-and-forth and explain why this case will give SCOTUS credibility it doesn’t deserve. They also cover the President’s firing of the blonde with the binders, Pamela Jo Bondi–pouring one out for her chaotic, destructive reign at the Department of Justice. Oil, Iran, and the Cost of Escalation

What happens when a war starts breaking the systems it depends on? In this debut episode of American Power, hosted by Nat Towsen, we break down the escalating conflict with Iran. As the Strait of Hormuz closes and the threat expands to the Red Sea, oil markets surge, global trade slows, and the cost of escalation becomes harder to contain. Military strategist Chad Scott explains why the U.S. may be past the point of easy de-escalation, and what “boots on the ground” really means in a country the size of Western Europe. Energy expert Matt Randolph (Mr. Global) walks through how oil, shipping, and fertilizer disruptions are already rippling through the global economy and why even reopening the Strait won’t fix what’s coming next.   We’re always looking for new opportunities to partner with creators, companies, politicians, and organizations that share our mission.
